Tonight, we honour Jim Belton, whose life exemplifies "Service Above Self."
Leadership
Family Business
Jim began his leadership journey in the Belton family lumber and building materials business, Belton Lumber and Belton Building Materials. His 27 years of experience spanned all facets of these businesses from 1962 to 1989.
Jim also held various vocational leadership roles, helping to form policy, through various professional organizations:
  • Lumber and Building Materials Association of Ontario (L.B.M.A.O.): President (1974-1975), Chairman of the Canadian Home Centre Show (1976).
  • London Executive Association: President (1973-1974), Member (1969-1976).
Professional Career
In his professional career, Jim held significant roles:
  • The Lung Association: Executive Director (Elgin, London & Middlesex), Regional Director (Southwestern Ontario), and member of the Provincial Management Committee from 1988 to 2005.
  • Hutton House Association/Hutton House Foundation: Events Coordinator since 2006.
Rotary Leader
As a Leader in the Rotary Club of London Downtown, Jim has continuously served as a board member since 1978. He was also the 1988-1989 President and has been the secretary of the club without a break since 2006.
Jim has also served on the Club Foundation board and was chairman in 1990/1992
Jim worked and led efforts on the London Sports Celebrity Dinner from 1975 through 1988, and chaired the Rotary Horse Show from 1982 - 1987
Fundraising
Jim's fundraising efforts have made a significant impact:
  • The Lung Association: Over the 17 years of leadership at the Lung Association, Jim led successful initiatives to support public health.
  • Rotary: Co-chaired the London Sports Celebrity Dinner and chaired the Rotary Horse Show, raising substantial funds for community projects.
  • Southwest Trillium Hunter/Jumper Equestrian Circuit: Managed finances.
  • Church of St. John the Evangelist: Handled fundraising responsibilities.
International Service
Jim’s commitment to international service is evident through his work with Rotary International. As part of Rotary International District 6330, he was a member and chairman of the Group Study Exchange Committee and led a Groupteam to Southern Study Exchange India in 1986. He also served as Chairman of The Rotary Foundation Committee from 1991 to 1995.
Jim is a major donor and an eight-time Paul Harris Fellow who has been recognized for his substantial contributions. In 1995, the Rotary Foundation awarded him the Citation for Meritorious Service.
Community Service
Jim’s community service is extensive. He was involved with Scouts Canada, serving on the Executive Committee (1971-1989) and as Vice President (1979-1980). He was recognized with the Medal of Merit and Certificate for Good Service by the Boy Scouts of Canada.
He co-founded the Sunshine Foundation of Canada, served as a director for SARI Therapeutic Riding (2004-2006), and held multiple roles with the London Chamber of Commerce including President (1982-1983), Director (1979-1984), and Governor (since 1997). Jim also served as Director for the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (1983-1984).
Jim's dedication has been recognized with numerous awards, including:
  • The Hon. Ray Lawson Rotarian of the Year Award (1982-1983)
  • Jack Burghardt Community Service Above Self Award (2016-2017)
  • Canadian Citizenship Recognition (Government of Canada, 1987)
  • William G. Gansler Award for Significant Contributions to Rotary as a Club Secretary (2010)
